Design and Technology

Intent

At Whitehall Primary School, Design & Technology is designed with the curriculum vision in mind. Children need to become curious by becoming active learners so that they can make informed choices to solve problems. Through this value, children can think critically by making meaningful connections with what they have learned and apply it to everyday tasks beyond the classroom. We strive for our children to have aspirations for the future. They are provided with the knowledge, skills and opportunities for children to become engaged in their learning and to see the connection between what they learn today and what they want to become tomorrow. We foster children’s independency through developing their self-confidence and self-motivation to become independent in their thinking and actions.

1. Aims and Objectives Design and Technology (DT) is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

The DT curriculum has been designed with a pedagogical approach in mind. We want to allow children to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills through teacher led and enquiry-based learning. Our intent is to teach children the substantive and disciplinary knowledge about products and materials children will come across in Design & Technology. This is then further broken down to include the application of that knowledge gained so that knowledge and skills are progressive and sequential.

The aims of Design and Technology also include:

  • To develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • To build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make highquality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • Critique, evaluate, test their ideas, products and work of others
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
