Intent

At Whitehall we want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French.

Through the scheme of work, we aim to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages, developing a strong understanding of the English language, facilitating future study and opening opportunities to study and work in other countries in the future.

The curriculum aims are underpinned by our school’s core values: Aspiration, Curiosity and Independency. 

We strive for our children to have high aspirations thus the curriculum provides them with the knowledge, skills and opportunities to be the best they can possibly be. It is the intention that all children in KS2 will develop resilience in language learning as well as enjoyment and aspiration through quality first teaching of French in order to gain experience of other languages.

Through weekly French lessons, children are encouraged to be curious about new French vocabulary. Within lessons, children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. These will help them develop communication skills including key skills of Speaking and Listening.

Children are given opportunities to be independent and are encouraged to develop their selfconfidence and self-motivation in improving their pronunciation and applying grammar knowledge. Learning another language also encourages the children to understand their own cultures and those of others.
