WORLD BOOK DAY IS ON THURSDAY 4TH MARCH - The children can dress up as a character from a book for the day. Take a photo of them with a copy of their favourite book and email it to us and share it on our Twitter page @WhitehallPriSch for friends to see. 

WORLD BOOK DAY COMPETITION - (see learning pack for details) 
We would like children to design a new book cover for a story by the author Julia Donaldson or their favourite story. The designs need to include the book title, author’s name and a picture linked to the story.
Competition entries should be emailed to reception@whitehall.leicester.sch.uk by Wednesday 3rd March. Each entry needs to have the child’s first name and class included.
There will be book prizes for each year group!
Winners, in each year group, will be announced on World Book Day!

We hope you have collected the second Home Learning Pack for the children. The pack should give you ideas for the next half terms learning. We will also give suggestions for weekly activities to link with the theme of the week.

Dear Parents/Carers
The Reception Team hope that you are keeping safe at home.
We will be sending weekly ideas for you to try at home to keep the children busy.
Our Topic this term is Growing Plants.
This week we would like you to explore vegetables with your child. Please read/listen to the story 'Oliver's Vegetables' by Vivian French. You can find a video of it on YouTube. Talk about the different vegetables in the story. Ask them what vegetables they like to eat. Go on a vegetable hunt in your kitchen. What vegetables can they find?
Maths - sort the vegetables in size and length. Talk about the weight and compare. Use the vegetables to to count, subtract and add.  
English - Ask them to retell the story, then try and write some sentences about the story. Draw and write about their favourite vegetables. 'I like to eat ...... because.....'
Understanding the World - Discuss with them - what part of the plants are the vegetables - leaves, root, stem, etc. Where do they grow? Under the ground, on the ground, above the ground? 
If you have some potatoes or carrots or parsnips or beetroot at home (root vegetables), chop the top part off and put them in a shallow dish of water. Watch what happens over the weeks. They should start to sprout leaves. 
If you have seeds - plant some veg in the garden. 
Art and Design - Draw or paint pictures of the vegetables. Chop the veg in half and use paints to print with them.
Make salt dough - 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 3/4 cup of water. make into a dough. Mould the dough into different vegetables. Put on a baking tray and bake at 180 degrees (times will vary according to the thickness of the models). Once cooled, paint the 'vegetables'. The children can play with these - create a vegetable shop and price the vegetables for the children to buy and sell (Maths - money).
Cooking - Make a vegetable soup. Allow your child to help you chop the veg and make a soup. Or make a vegetable juice or smoothie. What other dishes can you cook for them to eat?
Please take photos of your child doing the activities and create a scrap book. When all this is over and we are back to school, your child can bring the scrap book in and share with us all the fun they have been having at home! Post the photos on our Twitter page @WhitehallPriSch
